Equine Assisted EMDR

Equine Assisted EMDR

To my knowledge, I am the only Registered Psychologist in Saskatchewan who has been trained in the Equi-lateral protocol and am qualified to offer Equine-Assisted Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EA-EMDR) to clients. EA-EMDR is a form of trauma treatment that combines two powerful approaches to help clients heal and reach their therapeutic goals. EMDR is a well-established form of psychotherapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to help process distressing memories, emotions, and bodily sensations. Equine-assisted therapy involves working with horses to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their emotions, and their body language.

In EA-EMDR, horses can often help people feel more grounded and connected to their bodies. We will work through the phases of EMDR in the presence of the horses as much or as little as is helpful for each client. EA-EMDR is a unique and powerful form of therapy that can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced trauma or emotional distress. As trauma is a time-oriented disorder that causes people to get stuck in the past, horses can help to keep people grounded in the present. Additionally, as prey animals, they are highly attuned to emotional and energetic components which can help deepen client experiences and learnings. By combining the therapeutic benefits of EMDR with the presence of horses, clients can develop a deeper understanding and connection with themselves.

This form of therapy is offered in a private, outdoors, country setting about 20 minutes north of Prince Albert. All work with the horses occurs on the ground (no ridden component) and we can be as close or as distant from the horses as clients are comfortable with. Additionally, a mix of in-office combined with in-person work with the horses can be accommodated as per client preferences. As a previously certified level 1 Western Riding Coach with Equine Canada, and certified through the Cartier Equine Assisted Learning program (also research-based), I am uniquely qualified to be able to offer this modality as a form of healing to my clients.

Meet your equine friends who will come alongside you during an experiential approach to treatment!
